The suggester says of this ultra-cool origami, "A beautiful, classic kusudama created using a novel medium, where the origami is made all the more lovely by the meanings behind the paper...simply a delight to view.

Kusudamas are a special type of origami, which involves making lots of little flower modules to form the final piece."

Description

Kusudama

60 modules, around 7cm squared, cut from an old copy of Homer's Odyssey. Stuck together in groups of 5 to make 12 flowers. The end result was around 15cm from top to bottom.

I followed this tutorial.

Cropped, saturation adjusted and cord holding up the kusudama was erased out.

With thanks to `synconi, *oyah and `3wyl who saw the kusudama in its earlier state!

ὁδoς: journey

A couple of months ago a friend suggested that I should make a "flower" kusudama. I really liked the idea of doing this, but I also wanted a way to use origami as a way of expressing something, not just as a hobby or to make something that looked vaguely geometrical. Since being captivated by Homer's Odyssey a couple of years ago I've been fascinated by its sheer beauty (and "epicness" you might say) and decided I would use the pages from an old copy of the poem to fold the kusudama (despite originally having some qualms about tearing Homer's work into shreds.)

Although this kusudama is certainly not as "epic" as the poem, I believe that it is one of the first pieces of art that I've made which means something to me: it reflects for me the journey I've been on and the huge journey still left.

This must have taken forever! That's some serious paper-folding!
